Please Hold is a site-responsive installation that was temporarily housed in the pit under the floor of my former shared studio in a former mechanic’s garage. The looping audio track is a file that was created by collaging recordings I made in my house and car: two zones of heightened maintenance. The most easily recognizable sound element is a recording I captured while on the phone waiting on hold; Opus no. 1 (1989) recorded by Tim Carleton and popularized in the late 90s when it became Cisco’s most popular hold music. I’ve encountered this song for years on hold with insurance companies and you probably have too.
