Crip Algebra
with alx velozo and R.A. Walden
Current Space, Baltimore, MD
2023
Crip Algebra is a collaborative exhibition of three queer disabled sculptors exploring the calculations it requires to cultivate access in an ableist world. Velozo, Walden, and Shemesh have been part of a queer crip carework system with one another for years. This show explores the acrobatic math of surviving and caring as disabled people using rubber, fire, and film.

Visual Description:
Throughout the gallery; six long hooks with putty-like surfaces, pigmented with a pink to yellow gradient, hang from the tiled drop-ceiling. A network of neon-yellow twine weaves through the hooks to form a “Y” formation above and to hang six plumb bobs below, interspersed throughout the room: a colorful rubber-band ball; a red felted ball that resembles raw meat with sinew and tissue pierced with used acupuncture needles; a beeswax candle suspended on an orchid aerial root that has been electroplated-copper; two mismatched halves of a broken agate geode; raw obsidian; and a cast silicon-bronze drip formation.

Visual Description:
Eight small, drippy supports elevate a gnarled, twisting metal vine sitting on the gallery floor, frozen in a gesture of undulation. Its surface has been built up with an organic accumulation of welded textures, and its primarily metallic coloration is highlighted with iridescent patinas of blues, golds, and oranges. Around the sculpture is a puddle of translucent teal silicone, revealing the pink terrazzo gallery floor underneath.

Visual Description:
Dripped candle wax in various shades of red, purple, and black extends up from a gloopy, black, organic base, resembling a cave or coral-like structure. At the sculpture’s top is a smooth surface of pooled marbled wax with a large hole to reveal the form’s interior.
